World Elephant Polo Championships 2007
Tiger Tops, Nepal

d

The Capitol Pachyderms are happy to announce we finished fifth at the 2007 World Elephant Polo Championships at Tiger Tops Jungle Lodge, located in the Royal Chitwan National Forest. Our final game was a tough match against the Nepalese National Parks team, and although winning is always more fun than losing, it was a pleasure and an honor to play against such able players and good sports.

The Capitol Pachyderms are also pleased to congratulate our team member, Gus Prentice, for winning the WEPA sportsmanship award, and our team stick mum, Nicole Theresia, for her team's victory in the ladies competition while playing for the Ladies' Andrew Martin team.

In terms of final results, Chopard Hong Kong ultimately won the final to become first-time WEPA champions, the Caledonian Cavaliers won for best team spirit, team Airey Wheeler, sponsored by bespoke tailor of the same name, the won the award for best dressed team, while Tickle and the Ivories won the wooden spoon (in reality some very snazzy gurkha knives) for a last-place finish. Although they did not finish high on the scoreboard, the Gurkha team also deserves an honorable mention, as they played very well despite fielding a team of complete elephant polo beginners for almost every game. The Australian team also earned a mention for their excellent performance in the Caledonian Cavaliers' Sound of Music competition.

The tournament itself took place in the village of Meghauly, was was an added bonus as the team was able to see the village and meet the friendly and hospitable locals. Tiger Tops sponsors the local school, and talking to the children in Meghauly it is evident that they are getting a good education.

For further information, please see the World Elephant Polo Association (WEPA).
